FOOTWEAR

Practical and comfortable footwear is crucial. You should have plenty of thick socks to cushion your feet as well as keep them warm and dry. Wool socks work very well for these purposes. Bear in mind that many socks manufactured today, especially the ones you’ll find in the average discount stores, are not going to hold up under harsh use and repeated washing. Instead of bargain hunting, spend the few extra dollars for higher quality.

I suggest you also pick up a pair or two of good work boots, if you don’t have them on hand already. Look for thick soles with good tread, preferably with a bit of ankle support. Sneakers might be fine for walking around the house and doing a few chores, but odds are very good you’ll be spending a lot more time working outside after a collapse. Plus, you’ll likely have to deal with dangerous debris such as broken glass, and the average tennis shoe just isn’t going to handle that very well.

If you live in an area that regularly receives significant snowfall, be sure you have snow boots as well. While your normal work boots might be OK in an inch or two of wet, cold, slippery snow, I bet your toes will be pretty numb with any higher accumulations.

After purchasing new boots, be sure to break them in well. Wear them often so they become comfortable. After a disaster, you’ll have enough on your plate without having to add blisters and sore ankles to the mix.
